The ice baths we install in Jakarta consist of four components working as one system: a tub with a watertight liner, a ½–1 HP chiller holding 3–15°C, filtration with ozone or UV, and tidy pipework. Full package price IDR 45–90 million installed, standalone chiller IDR 25–55 million, build time 1–2 weeks, 2-year construction warranty. That's the short answer — below is why each component exists, and why a version missing any of them always ends in complaints.
Ice water in a 33°C city is a machine's job
The physics is simple and non-negotiable: water in an open tub chases the air temperature. In a Jakarta running 31–34°C by day, "cold" tap water settles at 27–28°C — refreshing for washing your face, meaningless for cold therapy. Ice can pull it down briefly, but 15–20 kg dissolves in one session and the next day you start from zero again.
A chiller solves this in a boring, reliable way: the compressor pulls heat out of the water continuously, day and night, rain or blazing sun. You set 8°C today — at six tomorrow morning the water is still 8°C, no preparation, no waiting. For a habit that lives or dies on friction, "just get in" is the most important feature of all.
Anatomy of the cold plunge we build
Tub and liner. An outer frame of thermowood or finished hardwood — warm to look at, tropics-proof. Inside sits a fiberglass or stainless liner that genuinely holds the water: no seepage into the floor, no timber slowly rotting from within. Standard capacity is one adult submerged to the neck with knees comfortably bent — or a long version for straight legs.
The ½–1 HP chiller. The heart of the system. Half a horsepower handles a standard tub in a shaded spot; we recommend one HP for big tubs, back-to-back use by several people, or sun-struck rooftop positions. The inverter units we fit are quiet enough to stand near a bedroom — the hum is on par with a small outdoor AC unit.
Filtration and sanitation. A circulation pump pushes the water through a fine filter, then ozone or UV kills bacteria without the swimming-pool chlorine smell. The result is clear, neutral water — changed once every 2–4 weeks, not every other day.
Pipework and drainage. The fill line, the drain run to the nearest floor drain, and service access to the chiller — planned before the tub is placed, not improvised afterwards.
Where to put it: four proven positions
Our Jakarta experience boils down to four placements. Patio or back garden — the classic landed-house position in South and East Jakarta: near the back door, splashes don't matter, and the chiller hides along the wall. Rooftop — the favourite of PIK and Kelapa Gading homeowners: morning sessions under open sky; the requirements are a pipe run and shelter for the chiller from direct rain and sun. Master bathroom — for those who want total privacy; it needs an adequate floor drain and air circulation. Penthouse balcony or apartment service area — a route we work more and more for high-rise clients: a compact tub, the chiller standing on an anti-vibration pad so the hum doesn't travel to the unit below, and management coordination with paperwork we prepare. One number that can't be skipped here: a full tub plus its user can reach 400–600 kg, so a floor-slab check is a mandatory part of the survey — nothing is ordered until the structure is proven up to it.
At the free survey, the technician checks all four options on your property: floor strength, distance to a drain, the electrical run, and — often forgotten — how the tub gets in: through a door, the service lift, or lifted over the fence.
Temperature, hygiene and monthly upkeep
Our systems work across 3–15°C. Beginners are comfortable starting at 12–15°C; regular users mostly settle at 5–10°C. Below 5°C is experienced-user territory with short durations — our chillers can do it, it's your body that needs time to adapt. The duration and progression guide is in our ice bath for beginners article.
Routine upkeep is light: check and rinse the filter fortnightly, change the water every 2–4 weeks, wipe the liner at each change, and service the chiller every six months — our team can do it on a fixed schedule. Monthly electricity runs IDR 300–700K depending on target temperature and the tub's location; it's this number that makes us honest up front that a cold plunge is a subscription to cold, not a buy-and-forget purchase.
Ice bath prices in Jakarta
| Configuration | Indicative price |
|---|---|
| Complete cold plunge: tub + liner + chiller + filtration, installed | IDR 45–90 million |
| Standalone ½–1 HP chiller for your own tub | IDR 25–55 million |
| Filtration + ozone/UV upgrade for an older system | itemised in the quote |
| Routine 6-month servicing | scheduled per unit |
All indicative — tub size, chiller class and pipe runs move the number. A line-item quote is free after the survey, and the full price table shows where it sits among our other products.
Ice bath installation in South, North (PIK) and West Jakarta
Each district has its own placement pattern. In South Jakarta cold tubs most often stand on the rooftops of Kemang, Pondok Indah and Cilandak homes, or on the back terraces of landed houses. In North Jakarta — PIK, Pluit, Kelapa Gading — sea-facing rooftops and balconies dominate, and we choose chiller components rated for salty air. In West Jakarta, families in the Puri Indah and Kembangan clusters usually put it beside the pool or in a repurposed carport. Apartments in every district follow the same management approval route, and the chiller is placed on sound-damping mounts.

Electrics: the easy part, for once
Unlike a sauna heater demanding 7,700–11,000 VA, an ice bath chiller is a polite electrical neighbour: it draws around 400–900 watts while running. A 2,200 VA home usually copes, and apartments rarely have an issue. What we still install to standard: a separate breaker circuit and an ELCB — because this is still an electrical device living next to water, and "usually safe" isn't our working standard.
It's exactly this power-friendliness that has many clients start with the cold plunge, then add the sauna when ready. If you already know you're heading for the full hot–cold ritual, the sauna + ice bath package combines both in a single build — and we explain the contrast experience in our 30-minute contrast therapy guide.
From first chat to first plunge: 1–2 weeks
The process: photos of your spot and district via WhatsApp → free survey (all of DKI, from Pluit to Cilandak) → line-item quote → 50% deposit → assembly and pipework → a temperature pull-down test to target in front of you → handover with a 2-year construction warranty and the chiller's factory warranty.
The first plunge usually happens the evening the install finishes — and the first reaction is nearly always the same: thirty seconds of pure doubt, then a wide grin on climbing out. Send photos of your patio, rooftop or bathroom now; we reply with placement options and a cost range.
